My husband's paternal grandmother was a Nicholson - this is his family ancestry. I have listed my information sources, but sometimes it is 'guess' or 'gut' instinct. I am open to input, corrections, and stories for future researchers. For the most part, the italics or { parenthesis } are my personal thoughts, explanations, or musings.
Note that names, ages, places of birth and information often changed with each Census, switching first and second names, abbreviated and nick names can be confusing. I have transcribed as I see it, but try to note the error if I notice it. Lesley

VETERAN PRINTER DIES: David Powell passes away following operation. David Powell, veteran printer and lineotype operator of this city, died yesterday at his home 317 Woodside Avenue. He underwent an operation less than a week ago. Mr Powell, who worked last Thursday night in the composing room of the Courier Express, just as he had for the past 16 years, had complained to fellow workmen of not feeling well. The next day he was more seriously ill and soon after went to Mercy Hospital, where he submitted to an operation from which he failed to rally.
Mr Powell regarded as one of the ableist all-round printers in the city, held the high regard of fellow craftsmen in the Buffalo Courier Express chapel and in the local branch of the Typographical Union. He was born in Buffalo, attended public school here, and served his apprenticeship in the craft on the old Buffalo Commercial, coming to the Buffalo Courier as a machine operator. He operated a linotype machine for many years and of late had been working on the make-up of the paper. He was 51 years old.
The 20th Anniversary of the marriage of Mr and Mrs Powell was celebrated August 17. Surviving, besides the widow are the following children: Kathryn, Ruth, Emma, Dorothy, David, and Eleanor Powell, who live at the home address, and Mrs Melvin Chapin, of 104 Sheffield Avenue. Two half-brothers, William and Ellsworth Nicholson live in this city.

2 iii JAMES NICHOLSON b 1829 d 1866 - 2nd Generation Pennyslvia and New York, USA
I have transcribed as I see it, but try to note an error if I notice it. Lesley

2nd Generation NICHOLSON in the USA - third child of James Nicholson and Sarah 'unknown'.
James Nicholson born in Ireland about 1829, emigrated with his parents and two older brothers, to the Manayunk, Philadelphia area in Pennsylvania.
This record is the marriage of James Nicholson and Catherine Russell - though West Whiteland is about 20 miles west of Manayunk.

EXTRA INFORMATION; on Catherine Russell:
Born in Ireland about 1829. Maiden name found on youngest son, E E Nicholson's marriage certificate from Ontario, Canada, written "Cath Russell".
On the 1850 USA Census where Catherine and James were married with 1 year old daughter, Sarah and living with James's mother and family in Lower Manayunk, Philadelphia, there were "Russell's" born in Ireland in the same town - no parents with them.
Nancy Russell, age 21, born Ireland
Isabella Russell, age 18, born Ireland
Alexander Russell, age 14, born Ireland
Jane Russell, age 12, born in Ireland
Catherine named children Alexander, Isabella and Jane - so very likely these are her siblings. Alexander Russell was easier to research - he married Isabella Bradin, she was born 15 August 1837 in Ireland; the daughter of William Bradin and Elizabeth Bowles, both born in Ireland. Married in Philadelphia and had five children: William H. born about 1860, Elizabeth, John W., James Alexander, and Isabella.

Research Wikipedia: During the American Civil War, music played a prominent role on both sides of the conflict: Union and Confederate. On the American Civil War battlefield, different instruments including bugles, drums, and fifes were played to issue marching orders or sometimes simply to boost the morale of one's fellow soldiers.
Musicians on the battlefield were drummers and buglers, with an occasional fifer. Buglers had to learn forty-nine separate calls just for infantry, with more needed for cavalry. These ranged from battle commands to calls for meal time.
The Civil War was an important period in the development of American music. During the Civil War, when soldiers from across the country commingled, the multifarious strands of American music began to crossfertilize each other.

OLD PENNSYLVANIANS Reunion of Former Neighbors of the Keystone State.
About 200 people, formerly residents of Eastern Pennsylvania, gathered at Chamber's Hall, No 292 Elk Street last evening, in family reunion to socially meet with old acquaintances and friends. There was hardly standing room, and it was nearly midnight before all the guests could be served at the bountiful spread of eatables. All present seemed to enjoy themselves fully.
Although the reunion was intended for the old residents, yet there was present a goodly number of young people who took part in the programme and helped to entertain the guests.
The originator of this organization is Mr E Funk. At the meeting held last January, he proposed the names of P N Purcell, as president, E Funk secretary, and Mrs E Funk treasurer. An executive committee was also elected, which is composed of the following named gentlemen: Kyron Balkin, James Stormes, Thomas Quinn, Patrick Dougherty, and David H Powell. ...
Mr Purcell in a few remarks, briefly outlined the object of the reunion, which was designed to bring together those, who for 26 years had been co-laborers and friends. He said:
"The object of this meeting after so many years of separation, is to again renew our acquaintance. It affords me great pleasure to again meet you, together with your families. They are not all here, that came with us 26 years ago. This gathering is emblernational {??} of the past, present and future, as the divisions of time appears to us. There are those that time has left behind in the burying place. What a volume of biography is the graveyard.
In the distance are seen the huge mills that once gave employment to 100 men, with ourselves for many years. We no longer hear the rattle of the machinery so familiar to every mill man."
It is the object of the Eastern Pennsylvania people to perfect a permanent organization. The present officers of the organization were chosen by mutual consent. They will hold over until others are elected to fill their places.

The 1865 New York Census was hard to find because the last name NICHOLSON was recorded as McNICHOL, and birth place of James is incorrect - though ages and names of children are correct.

{ Research: "Rolling Mill" The first rolling mill - a factory where steel is rolled into sheets and bars, was constructed in Buffalo in 1846 by a group of men from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The business began as the Buffalo Iron and Nail Works. Some years later, Pratt and Company - iron and hardware dealers, took over the company. The manufacturing plant changed hands several times over the next twenty years, but it continued to employ 500 to 800 men. ... also pioneered the open-hearth steel process in Buffalo.
Iron ore smelting started in Buffalo about 1860. Its growth was assisted by the opening of the Erie Canal. ... The smelting industry was further aided by the discovery of unlimited iron ore deposits in northern Michigan. The Civil War also stimulated iron and steel production by the use of a new blast furnace, built in 1860, the first one on the Niagara Frontier.

The Buffalo Courier - Friday, March 1, 1889
